Rocky’s Story
There’s an intrinsic bond between physical and mental health that cannot be ignored in the practice of family medicine. Sometimes medical problems can cause mental health issues. “Conversely, when people aren’t healthy mentally, they typically don’t take care of themselves physically.”
At Modern Psychiatry, I help make those distinctions and connections, address medical problems, and identify mental health issues so that patients who reach out to the practice can promptly receive access to the care they need.
“It takes a lot of courage to open up ... particularly for men to say ‘I have a big black cloud hanging over me and I can’t shake it or I’m in a rut and I just can’t get out of it.’ Most people don’t do that. They’re used to being told throughout their whole lives, ‘just suck it up.’”
I typically thank patients for getting up the guts to reach out to someone and talk about things. Because a family physician’s office is a safe space or should be, and when physicians plumb the depths, they can uncover root causes that have been limiting a person’s overall wellbeing. “So many people are so desperate for help and at the most vulnerable place in their lives. It’s unimaginable.”
The incredible potential to help others is one of the reasons I love medicine. I was inspired by my mom who was a nurse for 45 years. I wanted to be a physician since I was five.
Physicians have to be at the top of their game. Every day. “You have to know what you’re talking about. And you have to come through for people.”
