Anna’s Story
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Psychotherapist at Modern Psychiatry. When working with my clients, it’s more about exploring what’s going on personally with them. “While there are many general things that go on around all of us, there are certain things specific to each of us individually. Developing coping skills and ways to manage the day-to-day stressors help people get through their days, weeks, and months.”
A 180 degree turnaround would be wonderful so that the lives of my clients would be completely perfect. But most of the time, that's not realistic. “It's more about making life less of a struggle, so they can say, ‘I've learned this. I'm practicing this. I’m in a better place.’”
That’s a long, long way from I don’t know what to do ... where to start. That’s an incredibly overwhelming, crippling feeling for individuals. More recently, post-pandemic, I see and hear even more people having uncertainties about the future, second-guessing themselves, and having a need to make sure they’re doing things right. This leads to a lot of difficulty coping and managing things. And that’s across the board from adolescents through adults.
Still, whether now or pre-COVID, once clients sort and process things, they can figure out ways to manage better. That's a big goal, so they're enjoying life, activities at school or work, their home life, or relationships with other people.
“Sometimes we don’t look at these seemingly little things as being meaningful, but they are. They keep things going, and you can build on that no matter what age you are.”
Getting up, showering, self-care. That can be huge. Planting a garden and watching plants or vegetables grow gives purpose.
Create a safe space, where clients feel comfortable, and respectful of each other ... where they come together to work together and fully experience their little piece of the world. That’s our goal at Modern Psychiatry.
Imagine if everyone makes those changes and comes together. “That could create a huge change in a positive way.”
